Аннотация. Авторы рассматривают развернувшиеся в американском истеблишменте в конце 1950-х – начале 1960-хгг. дискуссии о военной стратегии «массированного возмездия», предполагающей возможность использования всего ядерного потенциала США для достижения скорейшей победы в случае любого конфликта. Выделены три значимые группы участников споров: политики, генералитет, а также эксперты в области стратегии. Отмечено, что представители всех трех групп на рубеже1950–1960-хгг. пришли к выводу о необходимости переосмыслить роль ядерного оружия в стратегии США; показано, как в ходе дискуссий зарождались контуры новой стратегии «гибкого реагирования».

Abstract: The authors consider the discussions that unfolded in the American establishment in the late 1950s and early 1960s about the military strategy of “massive retaliation”, which presupposes the possibility of using the entire US nuclear potential to achieve an early victory in the event of any conflict. Three significant groups of participants in disputes are identified: politicians, generals, and experts in the field of strategy. It is noted that representatives of all three groups at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s came to the conclusion that it was necessary to rethink the role of nuclear weapons in the US strategy. They show how the outlines of a new “flexible response” strategy emerged during the discussions.
